42CrMo4 Alloy Steel – SAE-AISI 4140 is classified as low alloy steel. Medium carbon steels are high-strength steels that include EN19 as an important member in the low alloy category. These steels show a positive response to a variety of heat treatments. 42CrMo4 is a 1% chromium – molybdenum medium hardenability general purpose high tensile steel – generally supplied hardened and tempered in the tensile range of 850 –1000 Mpa (condition T). 42CrMo4 Alloy steel is a high quality, high tensile alloy steel usually supplied readily machinable in ' T' condition, giving good ductility and shock resisting properties combined with resistance to wear. 42CrMo4 is alloy steel for quenching and tempering, which has a good combination of strength and toughness in the quenched and tempered condition. After the oil quenching, the steel will be hardened up to ø60 mm bar diameter. The microstructure of larger dimensions is not a fully martensite.
First quenching heated slowly to 880°C, Then after adequate soaking at this temperature quench in oil or water. Temper as soon as tools reach room temperature. Second quenching heat to 780-820°C, then quenching in oil or water.
Heat to 205-649°C, then cools in water or oil. normal delivery hardness 18-22 HRC.

42CrMo4 alloy steel has good machinability in the annealed condition.
Engineering steel 42CrMo4 has only limited weldability. Preheating to 200-300°C is strongly recommended; the upper limit should not be exceeded because of the risk for deterioration of the chrome layer. Alloy steel 42CrMo4 can be friction welded. However, precautions are necessary so as to limit the formation of undesirable microstructures in the welded zone.
